Back stage at the Oscars with Steve Pond

Steve Pond, Oscar reporter for TheWrap, has been tracking Hollywood’s top trophy race since the 1980s when he covered the Academy Awards for the Washington Post. Later, he worked the beat for Premiere Magazine and joined me for the launch of the L.A. Times’ awards site TheEnvelope. Since his tenure at Premiere, he’s had an all-access pass to venture wherever he wanted during Oscar weekend, including rehearsals and goings-on during the live ceremony. He filed extensive reports for Premiere and other media afterward, then amassed his observations and dish into a book “The Big Show,” published by Faber & Faber (2005).

Yesterday Steve and I hooked up at the Hollywood Museum for serious Oscar chat, which Gold Derby will dole out in installment videos all week ahead. Let’s start with his peep back stage and the outrageous antics of three notorious divas: Madonna, Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand. Also watch our video slugfest over the best-picture race.
