Oscars 10 semi-finalists for Live-Action Short Film

Two of the recent winners of Student Academy Awards are one step closer to claiming Oscars with Tuesday’s announcement that their live action shorts made the semi-finals. NYU’s Luke Matheny (left) won the gold medal for “God of Love” while British student filmmaker Tanel Toom received an honorary award for “The Confession.” These wins made their films eligible for consideration. The remaining 74 entries qualified with either a 3-day commerical run in Los Angeles or by winning a best-in-category award at an approved competitive film festival.

As with the animated shorts, a reviewing committee drawn from active and life members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch viewed all entires, giving them a grade of 10 (excellent), 8 (good), 7 (fair) or 6 (poor). The 10 films with the highest average scores above 7.5 advanced. The entire membership of the Branch is invited to view these semi-finalists, and to grade them using the same scoring system. Only those films scoring at least an average of 7.5 are eligible to be nominated, with that roster to be limited to between three and five. Final voting will be open to all Academy members who attend screenings, with the exception of those members of the Branch who have watched all the semi-finalists already; they may vote by mail.

The other semi-finalists are:
