Steve Pond: Are ‘Black Swan’ and ‘The Fighter’ too weird for Oscars?

Steve Pond poses that provocative question in a must-read piece. For Steve, “Both films burst with creative energy. Both wowed audiences last week on consecutive nights at the AFI Fest. And both could have problems when it comes to the Oscar race, because they’re fresh and vital but also unruly and potentially polarizing.”

Among the 18 experts (including Steve) polled by Gold Derby, 16 predict “Black Swan” landing a Best Picture nomination while 11 think that “The Fighter” will make the cut. And among the performers, “Black Swan” leading lady Natalie Portman is in a heated battle with “Kids Are All Right” star Annette Bening for Best Actress while both Christian Bale and Melissa Leo of “The Fighter” are among the frontrunners for the Supporting awards.
