Supporting Actor showdown: Christian Bale vs. Geoffrey Rush

Our first team of 11 experts from various media and our 11 Gold Derby editors agree that the Best Supporting Actor race is between Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) and Geoffrey Rush (“The King’s Speech”). There is very little separating these two frontrunners at  this point in the season, with nearly all of the pundits picking one of them to win and the other to place.

TEAM CHRISTIAN BALE:
Thelma Adams (Us Weekly, Thelmadams.com), Erik Davis (Cinematical), Scott Feinberg (ScottFeinberg.com), Steve Pond (The Wrap), Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere)

TEAM GEOFFREY RUSH
Lane Brown (Vulture),  Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Dave Karger (Entertainment Weekly), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily),

TEAM MATT DAMON
Bob Tourtellotte (Reuters)

TEAM ED HARRIS
Guy Lodge (InContention)

While Bale and Rush are tied in the overall scoring, that extra first place finish for Bale puts him slightly ahead in the odds.

GOLD DERBY RACETRACK ODDS: EXPERTS
1.) Bale – 8/5
2.) Rush – 13/8

Among the 11 Gold Derby editors, I choose Bale as did seven others. Three of the editors opted for Rush and one held out for Harris. Those rankings translate to odds which have Bale firmly out in front.

GOLD DERBY RACETRACK ODDS: EDITORS
1.) Bale – 7/4
2.) Rush – 11/5
