Halle Berry is reportedly to make her Broadway debut next season in the new play “The Mountaintop” by Katori Hall. The Oscar champ (“Monster’s Ball”) would play a maid who encounters Dr. Martin Luther King in his Memphis hotel room the night before he is assassinated in 1968. Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction”) is said to be circling this plum role for his return to the rialto two decades after he was an understudy in August Wilson‘s “The Piano Lesson.”
Last March, this first play from the American actress pulled off an upset at the Olivier Awards, winning Best Play over two British works which had a leading six nominations each — “Jerusalem,” a dark comedy of class by Jez Butterworth and Lucy Prebble‘s “Enron,” a savage satire about that company’s implosion.
It had been expected that the Broadway production of “The Mountaintop would premiere this season but the schedules of the two stars dictates that this limited run not begin till next fall.
Below is a fascinating video diary of the play’s premiere production at London’s Theatre 503 starring David Harewood and Lorraine Burroughs.
