Can Alan Cumming go from guest nominee to supporting Emmys champ for ‘The Good Wife’? [Video]

Alan Cumming, who garnered a Drama Guest Actor Emmy bid last year for the legal drama “The Good Wife,” was signed on as a series regular this year. The Scotsman’s first experience with American awards came when he prevailed at the 1998 Tonys as Best Musical Actor for the revival of “Cabaret.” As he told Gold Derby, “That ‘Tony Award winner’ will forever be your prefix. And ‘Emmy nominee’ has a nice ring to it [too]!” Our expert Emmy pundits and our editors agree that Cumming is certainly in contention.

Only two other actors have contended for both guest and supporting performances on the same series. Christian Clemenson (“Boston Legal”) won Drama Guest Actor in 2006, was nominated again in 2007 (losing to John Goodman,”Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”) and then reaped a supporting nod in 2009 (losing to Michael Emerson, “Lost”). Ted Danson (“Damages”) went the other way with a supporting bid in 2008 (losing to cast mate Zeljko Ivanek) and then back-to-back guest nods in 2009 and 2010 (bested by Michael J. Fox in “Rescue Me” and then John Lithgow in “Dexter”).

Cumming also lost to Lithgow last year and considers this category to be “so full of people I admire.” As he acknowledges, with a wry smile, “of course, I didn’t win.” Referencing the role for which Litghow did prevail, he says Eli, a slippery political operative, might well become a serial killer to gain more votes.
