Although most pundits predicted that Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife”) would win Best Drama Actress at last year’s Emmy Awards, she was pipped at the post by Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer”). Sedgwick was contending for the fifth year in a row and finally prevailed because she entered an exceptionally strong episode. Margulies, who had won both the Golden Globe and SAG Award, ended up an Emmy also-ran because of her so-so showcase submission.
In the video below, senior editors Chris Beachum and Rob Licuria discuss how the category might play out this year. Margulies won again with SAG but Katey Sagal (“Sons of Anarchy”) claimed the Globe and could well nab her first-ever Emmy nomination. Other newcomers could include: Mireille Enos (“The Killing”), Piper Perabo (“Covert Affairs”) and Emmy Rossum (“Shameless”). Also in the hunt are seven-time nominee Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: SVU”) who won back in 2006 and Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”) who picked up her first bid last year and could contend again for her show’s final season.
Last year, January Jones (“Mad Men”) entered herself in this category and was rewarded with her first nomination. Just hours after this chat — in which Rob and Chris agreed that she should submit in supporting because she had far less to do this season — it was announced she will stay put. That places her in competition with co-star Elisabeth Moss — a 2009 lead contender and supporting nominee last year — who has returned to this race.
