Grammy Predictions: Best Pop Vocal Album

Gold Derby’s music experts David Schnelwar and Darrin Dortch reveal who will win and who should win in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album. In the days to come, they will be predicting the rest of the top Grammy races.

They already offered their picks and predix for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, Best Pop Performance By A Duo or Group with Vocals, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as the two dance-related categories: Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording.

And they have also given their predictions for Best Rap SongBest Rap Album, Best Rap Duo or Group, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Solo Performance.

“My World 2.0,” Justin Bieber
“I Dreamed A Dream,” Susan Boyle
“The Fame Monster,” Lady Gaga
“Battle Studies,” John Mayer
“Teenage Dream,” Katy Perry

David’s take: No artist has won in this category twice, so that hurts John Mayer‘s chance to win. Susan Boyle is the best seller of the five nominees but she failed to receive nominations for Album of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance to make a case for her to win Best Pop Vocal Album. She would have a better chance of winning had she been submitted to Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Justin Bieber‘s “My World 2.0” was an unexpected nominee and is unlikely to win. Ten out of sixteen times an Album of the Year nominee won in this category. Lady Gaga‘s “The Fame Monster” and Katy Perry‘s “Teenage Dream” are both nominated for Album of the Year. I think Lady Gaga will win.

Will win: “The Fame Monster,” Lady Gaga
Should win: “The Fame Monster,” Lady Gaga
Spoiler: “Teenage Dream,” Katy Perry

Darrin’s take: Despite being an Album of the Year nominee, I doubt Perry has much of a chance of winning here due to her album’s poor reviews and underwhelming sales. Mayer is a past winner here, but, again, his latest material is perceived as a disappointment. Bieber and Boyle’s albums are the biggest sellers here and could spoil, but they’ll probably ending up splitting the “best selling album” vote. Gaga is probably a dark horse to win Album of the Year so she’ll have little trouble winning here.

Will win: “The Fame Monster,” Lady Gaga
Should win: “The Fame Monster,” Lady Gaga
Spoiler: Everyone else
