How many Emmys will ‘Boardwalk Empire’ win?

If any show can unseat reigning three-time champ “Mad Men” at this year’s Emmys, it is “Boardwalk Empire.” After all, the new HBO period crime drama won both Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes and the Drama Ensemble prize at the SAG Awards. The show reaped a whopping 18 Emmy bids, just one short of “Mad Men,” to place second among the six nominees for Best Drama Series, ahead of HBO stablemate “Game of Thrones” (13 nominations), “The Good Wife” (nine), “Dexter” (five) and “Friday Night Lights” (four).

Set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, and adapted by Emmy-winning writer Terrence Winter from the book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City” by Nelson Johnson, “Boardwalk Empire” focuses on Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a powerbroker dealing with notorious mobsters, politicians and the community.

“Boardwalk” fell short in the acting races with only Buscemi and supporting actress Kelly Macdonald singled out among the show’s sprawling cast. While our editors and users think Macdonald might end up an also-ran in her category, Globe and SAG champ Buscemi is currently in second place among the leading men behind Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”).

And although it will be tough to beat Emmy darling “Mad Men” in the competitive Drama Series race, the show is currently sitting in second place with 11/2 odds. However, “Boardwalk” was not nominated for writing which is a bellwether for Best Drama Series. “24” did win the top prize in 2006 without a writing nomination and “The Practice” did the same in 1999. “The Sopranos” won the writing race both those years.

“Boardwalk” is favored to prevail in several creative and technical races. Oscar champ Martin Scorsese is nominated for helming the pilot. It has three of the cinematography slots, including one for Oscar nominated lenser Stuart Dryburgh who worked on the pilot. The art direction and costumes of the period piece are top-notch as was the casting.
