Josh Charles says ‘wait and see’ after sensational season finale of ‘The Good Wife’ [Video]

While the characters played by Josh Charles and Julianna Margulies on “The Good Wife” finally gave in to temptation after two years of sexual tension, we won’t know what happens next till the fall.

Asked whether this wait was cruel, Josh laughed, arguing much like the hotshot lawyer he plays that, “it’s good though because it lets everybody’s imagination take over and they can ponder what will happen starting season three.”

Chatting with Gold Derby senior editors Rob Licuria and Chris Beachum, the actor revealed, “we’re going to get into Will’s backstory; it will be a nice long arc where it’ll be really revealing for the character.”

He talked at length about his season highlights, including “Double Jeopardy,” where his character defends a client in a military court, “Two Courts,” in which Will deals with a biased judge who also happens to be his friend, and “Closing Arguments,” the explosive season finale. He credits the helmers of those episodes, explaining that, “in television, so much attention is put on the words, being primarily a writer’s medium … but the directors of those episodes really pushed [and focused on] the behaviour as much as possible … what’s going on underneath the words.”

“It was really challenging working on all three of those episodes” Charles recalled, explaining, “you get to see the moral ambiguiuty of Will, and also his tenaciousness in the courtroom … he’s a character that really wants to win at all costs, and is not interested in morality; he doesn’t care if people like him or not, he’s not doing this for the ‘right reason’, he’s doing it because he wants to win … and you get to see little glimpses of what those choices have done to him and how they’ve affected his personal life.”

He also touched on his good fortune being part of ensembles such as Aaron Sorkin’s comedy “Sports Night” and “In Treatment,” as well as his years on stage and screen (including the classic “Dead Poets Society“). Charles also showed great affection for the cast of “The Good Wife,” saying, “I see these people more than I see my girlfriend or members of my family and so who you work with means a great deal. We have such a fine group on this show … and it all starts with ‘Jules’ … she’s just phenomenal, I couldn’t ask for a better leading lady.”
