Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Adele big winners at MTV VMAs

After five previous losses, Katy Perry finally won at the MTV Video Music Awards claiming three of the Moonman statues Sunday night including the top prize of Video of the Year for “Firework.” She also won two awards for “E.T.,” her hit single with Kanye West — Best Collaboration and Best Special Effects. Those were the only wins for West who had seven bids in all.

Brit singing sensation Adele also earned seven nominations, all for “Rolling in the Deep,” a track from her No. 1 album “21.” That video won art direction, cinematography and editing. However, for Sunday’s show from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Adele chose to sing her new single “Someone Like You.” (MTV originally reported this video won direction as well but that award really went to “Make Some Noise” by the Beastie Boys.)

Beyoncewho confirmed Sunday that she is expecting, won just one of her three bids — the choreography award for “Run the World (Girls).” She delighted the audience with her heartfelt rendition of “Love on Top.” Nicki Minaj also prevailed with just one of her three bids with a win for Hip Hop Video for “Super Bass.”

Last year, Lady Gaga reaped a record 13 nominations, winning eight of the Moonman statues. This year, she earned just four bids, but won both Pop Video and the new category Message Video for “Born this Way.” She opened the show dressed as a male alter-ego, Joe Caldarone, and performed “You and I.”

Eminem — who won two of his nine bids last year — was snubbed in three categories for “Love the Way You Lie,” including Male Video which went to Justin Bieber (“U Smile”).

Britney Spears went without a win for her first 17 VMA nominations before “Piece of Me” swept the 2008 kudos, winning Video of the Year as well as both Best Pop and Female Video. Spears won Best Pop Video again the following year for “Womanizer” and took home her third Moonman in that race Sunday with a surprise victory for her latest hit “Till the World Ends.” She was also feted with a special Video Vanguard award at the ceremony.

Also saluted during the show was the late Amy Winehouse, with words of appreciation from Russell Brand and Tony Bennett, who introduced a clip of their duet on “Body and Soul,” as well as a performance of her hit “Valerie” by Bruno Mars
