MIA from MTV VMAs: Katy Perry, Kanye West and a host

This Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards will include a salute to Britney Spears and a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. The show is set to be opened by last year’s queen of the kudos, Lady Gaga. Other nominees set to perform include Adele, Beyonce, Chris Brown and Bruno Mars.

However, Katy Perry, who leads with 10 bids, is not on the bill. And neither is Kanye West, her collaborator on “E.T.” who is tied for second place with seven nominations.

Also absent from the show, which will be screened across the MTV family of channels live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, will be an emcee. Last year, Chelsea Handler handled hosting duties. Though she was roundly criticized, she did preside over a kudocast seen by 11.4 million people, earning the best ratings since 2002.

In their 27-year history, the VMAs have only gone without a host twice — in 2004 when they aired from Miami for the first time and in 2007 when they originated for their one and only time from Las Vegas. What happens in Las Vegas should have stayed in Las Vegas as this edition of the awards included Spears’ poor performance of “Gimme More” and an altercation between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee
