Should Brett Ratner resign as producer of Oscars after gay slur? (Poll)

Brett Ratner was already a surprising choice for Oscar producer, but now he may also be an entirely inappropriate one. Vulture reports that during the Q&A session following a screening of “Tower Heist” last Friday, Ratner told the audience “rehearsal’s for fags.”

Ratner quickly backpedaled telling The Wrap, “I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don’t have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words.”

Is there any excuse for this flippant use of homophobic language, particularly when you’re in charge of  the most-watched awards presentation on the planet? His choice of words suggest he is tonedeaf to a sizable segment of the Oscar show’s audience. Furthermore, several high-profile films with LGBT themes are in the Oscar race, including “J. Edgar,” “Beginners,” and “Albert Nobbs.” How odd will it be to see them represented on Ratner’s telecast following his comments?

Tower Heist” stars Eddie Murphy, who Ratner tapped to host this year’s Oscars. Murphy told many homophobic jokes during his stand-up comedy days for which he later apologized.
