What were the biggest surprises in the Emmy nominations? [Photo Gallery]

There were many welcome surprises at this year’s Emmy nominations, including a Best Comedy Actress bid for Melissa McCarthy (“Mike and Molly”). She found out the good news from Joshua Jackson (“Fringe“) while the pair were at the podium announcing the contenders for the 63rd annual awards.

Among the other unexpected nominees was “Parks and Recreation” which slipped into the Best Comedy Series race after being all but ignored its first two seasons. And the departing “Friday Night Lights” scored its first — and last — bid for Best Drama Series while its two leads, Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, contend for the second year in a row.

While “Justified” was snubbed in the top race, it did reap bids for Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, while Alfre Woodard became the first member of the “True Blood” cast to contend.
