Like television itself, the Emmys love reruns, nominating many of the same shows and people every year. However, Emmy voters occasionally surprise us by recognizing newcomers. Last year, “True Blood” landed a Best Drama Series nomination, defying the TV Academy’s long-standing bias against fantasy shows. The year before, “Family Guy,” became the second animated series to compete in the Comedy Series category after “The Flintstones” in 1961 while “Big Love” reaped a Best Drama Series bid, its only nomination that year.
Last year, Matthew Fox (“Lost”) and both Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights) landed their first lead acting bids well into the run of their series. In 2009, Sarah Silverman (“The Sarah Silverman Program”) and Jermaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) were unexpectedly nominated in the lead comedy categories.
Gold Derby surveyed a dozen Emmy experts, our 11 editors and hundreds of users to determine who is ahead in the top 20 Emmy races and presents this information in the new charts titled Emmy Nominees Will Be … found in the right-hand column of this page. Among these lists are many names new to the Emmys. Our message board posters have weighed in with their thoughts on which of these are most likely to reap bids Thursday. Sam: John Noble (“Fringe”) pictured above with his CCTA award for Best Supporting Drama Actor
Kelemenmarc: Sara Ramirez “Grey’s Anatomy”. I don’t care what people say, she’s definitely in the Top 6 supporting drama actress this year
Adamunc: Busy Philipps (“Cougar Town”)
Rburton: John Benjamin Hickey (“The Big C”)
EmmyLoser: John Noble (“Fringe”) would be my answer, too, but since that’s been said a couple of times now, I’ll go with Courteney Cox (“Cougar Town”)
Karl William Delossantos: I think that Patricia Heaton should definitely be up there. She is great on “The Middle”. I know she’s not Deborah Barone, she’s Frankie Heck and I think she is fantastic
Eoindaly2k11: Chloe Sevigny (“Big Love”)
The BC 2.0: Monica Potter (“Parenthood”)
Gambit: Donald Glover (“Community”)
Fisbiscuit: Jennifer Carpenter (“Dexter”)
Tom Smith: Sara Ramirez (“Grey’s Anatomy”)
CatrionaMcQuade: Sara Ramirez “Grey’s Anatomy” – she has had a great year it would be such a shame if she doesn’t get in!
Daniel Montgomery: Louis CK (“Louie”) – Doesn’t matter where. He would be equally deserving of writing, directing, acting, and Comedy Series nods. If he gets at least one of those, I’ll be happy
Jay.Gee: Naya Rivera (“Glee”)
Marcus Dixon: John Noble (“Fringe”)
Uncreativename: KaDee Strickland (“Private Practice”)
Slam: Definitely Chloe Sevigny for her final shot at a nomination for “Big Love”
That Don Guy: Since there does not seem to be a restriction limiting these to the “broadcast awards,” I’ll say Billy West (voiceover, Futurama) – for some reason, I think he’s on the “wait over there next to Harry Shearer” list for some reason
Darrin L. Dortch: Donald Glover and Danny Pudi are brilliant on “Community.” They both deserve to break into that competitive supporting comedy actor lineup.
LadyHathor: John Noble (“Fringe”)
Efficiency: Eva Longoria (“Desperate Housewives”)
