Who will host the Oscars: Ben Stiller, Billy Crystal or … ?

While the positions of Oscar producers have been filled with Don Mischer and Brett Ratner, the “help wanted” sign is still hung out for host. TV vet Mischer co-helmed this year’s ceremony with Oscar-winning film producer Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”). The event was universally panned by critics and audiences, with much of the blame centered on the slow pace and the lack of chemistry between co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco. However, given Mischer’s extensive experience producing live events (Olympic ceremonies, Super Bowl halftime shows, Emmy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors), let’s hope he learns from his mistakes.

His new producing partner is a successful feature director (“X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Rush Hour”) with an extensive knowledge of film history. Perhaps Ratner can convince Ben Stiller, who stars in his next film “Tower Heist,” to emcee the kudocast.

In the past decade, Academy Awards producers have tapped the following folks to host: Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin (2009); Hugh Jackman (2008); Jon Stewart (2007, 2005); Ellen DeGeneres (2006); Chris Rock (2004); Billy Crystal (2003 and seven times in the 1990s); Steve Martin solo (2002, 2000) and Whoopi Goldberg (2001 and three times in the 1990s).

Will Mischer and Ratner enlist one of these vets to return to the Kodak Theatre? Tom Hanks and Will Smith are always on the wish list. How about Neil Patrick Harris who won an Emmy for hosting the Tonys? Or Justin Timberlake who won an Emmy for hosting “SNL.”  VIEW GALLERY
