Will Lady Gaga add an Emmy to her mantle?

Just two days after Lady Gaga laid an egg at the Grammys, HBO announced it will air a concert special featuring her elaborate act on May 7. The title tells it all — “Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour At Madison Square Garden.” In making the announcement, HBO’s entertainment president Sue Naegle called Lady Gaga “the single most exciting music talent on the scene today.”

The paycaster will tape her Feb. 21 and 22 gigs at the famed venue and then create “unique new elements” for the TV edition. The special will be directed by Lauriann Gibson who helmed Lady Gaga’s Grammy-winning video “Bad Romance” as well as her film versions of “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro.” Producing are Lady Gaga, Troy Carter, Vincent Herbert and Jimmy Iovine.

The Emmys eliminated the individual achievement in a variety program award in 2009. Principal performers, such as Lady Gaga, are now included among the nominees for the specials themselves. In recent years, at least one musical show has usually contended in this category. Among the singing showcases to win were “Tony Bennett: An American Classic” (2007); “Elaine Stritch: At Liberty” (2004); and “Cher — The Farewell Tour” (2003).
