Will Ricky Gervais charm hosting Golden Globes for third time?

All has been forgiven as the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. has asked Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes for the third year in a row. The group made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Following the HFPA announcement of his return to the podium at the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 15, the wry Ricky wrote on Twitter: “Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true)”

At last January’s awards, Gervais took potshots at the HFPA and various nominees. His ribbing wrankled a few of the members of the HFPA but the celebrities in the spotlight took it in good stride. Indeed, Johnny Depp, who was the target of a zinger about his nod for “The Tourist,” made fun of the supposed feud in an appearance on Gervais’ new series “Life’s Too Short.”

Two weeks after those Globes, Gervais was asked by NBC to host again. As he wrote on his blog at the time:

“The TV show organisers said they were happy with everything and asked me to not rule out a third gig. However, it is not entirely up to them. The Hollywood Foreign Press and various other committees need to meet and agree. I have no idea if they want me back again. It depends whether they care about fifty delicate egos in the room or the 200 million people watching at home who want a laugh.

Also, even if they did want me back, at the moment I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t do it. But I’ll tell you this. If they do invite me back and I accept, I’m going to pull exactly the same s**t again or even worse.

Once again, everyone has been warned.”

In July, the Emmys nominated the Golden Globes in the Special Class category reserved for award shows. As Gervais told Gold Derby then, “Why is anybody surprised by what I did at the Golden Globes? Everybody knows what I do. I roast people. I’m an outsider so I roast people on the inside. I don’t want to be just a court jester. A comedian’s job is to make people think as well as to laugh. Comedy is an intellectual exercise.”

Ever the imp, he said he used some sly Golden Globe tactics to get the Emmy bid: “I took every Emmy voter in America to see Cher in concert. It cost me a million, but it was worth it. Apparently, she’s still alive. She even older than those ‘Sex and the City’ gals. In fact, she played their mum in ‘Bonanza.'” He wanted Charlie Sheen to accept should he win. Alas, we missed that moment as the 2010 Tony Awards hosted by Sean Hayes won the Emmy.
