Out in front for Album of the Year is Adele, whose “21” has sold more than 4 million copies in the United States alone. However, she could be derailed by veteran Tony Bennett. His “Duets II” features collaborations with Grammy favorites Lady Gaga, John Mayer, Norah Jones, and the late Amy Winehouse. Lady Gaga has her own solo contender in “Born This Way,” which sold more than a million copies in its first week of release.
Adele also leads the races for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Her enormous hit “Rolling in the Deep” sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and crossed over to multiple genre charts. Among her challengers are Katy Perry (“Firework“), Kanye West (“All of the Lights“), Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks“), and Taylor Swift (“Back to December“).
Country artists lead in Best New Artist with The Band Perry potentially taking the prize and duo The Civil Wars in line for a nomination. Hip-hop star Nicki Minaj and alternative artist Bon Iver are among the definite threats.
