While the races for two of the four general categories at the Gramms seem to be over, there is always a chance that someone else could prevail.
Adele‘s “21” has ranked at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart 18 times and is the closest thing to a lock in years. All three of her released singles peaked at #1. If there is an upset, it would be the Foo Fighters‘ “Wasting Light.” “21,” Bruno Mars‘ “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way” and Rihanna‘s “Loud” are all nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and could possibly split the vote. The Foo Fighters are the the only non-Pop Field representative and they could win.
Bon Iver is the assumed frontrunner because they are nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. However, other well-known artists have been nominated for the top three awards and lost Best New Artist: Billy Ray Cyrus (1992), Joan Osborne (1995), Hanson (1997), India.Arie (2001), James Blunt (2006) and Corinne Bailey Rae (2006).
Nicki Minaj is the best known and biggest seller among the nominees. She has collaborated with artists ranging from Rihanna to David Guetta to Madonna. Fourteen of the past twenty winners have been women. The last time a rap artist won was Arrested Development in 1992 making another such win way overdue.
