Rihanna is a five-time winner at the American Music Awards. Since 2007, she has been named Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist three times, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist once, and Favorite Soul/R&B Album last year for “Loud.” This year marks her first time nominated for Artist of the Year; to win she’ll have to defeat Drake, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, and 2010 winner Justin Bieber.
Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are both nominated for a field-leading four awards. Minaj, who won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album at last year’s event, is nominated in those categories again this year, along with Pop/Rock Female Artist and Album.
Nominated for three awards apiece are Artist of the Year nominees Drake, Bieber, and Maroon 5, along with One Direction and Usher. These are the first AMAs for the British boy band One Direction, who contend for New Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album. Meanwhile, Usher is a veteran of the AMAs, having won seven awards since 2004.
This year, the American Music Awards introduced a new category: Favorite Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Artist. The nominees are Calvin Harris and Grammy-winners Skrillex and David Guetta. Those three also competed against each other at the MTV VMAs’ inaugural EDM category, where Harris prevailed.
Winners for the AMAs are decided by fans, who can vote for winners at amavote.com, but you can predict the winners here. Will Rihanna sweep? Will Bieber repeat? Make your predictions before the AMAs are broadcast live on Sunday, November 18, on ABC.
