The third season of “Downton Abbey” is set to air in its native England beginning next month. It will air stateside as part of PBS’s “Masterpiece” series next January.
Among the treats teased in the trailer below are the arrival of Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine as the interfering mother of the lady of the manor (Elizabeth McGovern), the resolution of a murder mystery and the continuing romantic woes of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and cousin Matthew (Dan Stevens).
The second season of the period piece picked up 16 Emmy Award nominations, including bids for Best Drama Series, Drama Actor (Hugh Bonneville), Drama Actress (Michelle Dockery), Drama Supporting Actor (Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle) and Drama Supporting Actress (Joanne Froggatt, Maggie Smith).
Last year, in an upset over frontrunner “Mildred Pierce,” “Downton Abbey” won Best Movie/Miniseries for its first season with Smith taking the supporting prize.
