While all six of last year’s Emmy Award nominees for Best Comedy Actress are eligible to contend again, three are likely to lose their spots to stars of freshman series.
Eight of our Experts and four Editors predict that third time will be the charm for NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” leading lady Amy Poehler. This one-time “SNL” star was behind last year’s “beauty pageant” lineup at the Emmys.
Melissa McCarthy was the winner of that race, prevailing for the first season of CBS’ “Mike & Molly.” Her surprise victory could have been the result of the success of the movie “Bridesmaids” which eventually netted her an Oscar nom. None of our Experts or Editors are predicting McCarthy to repeat. Indeed, she barely makes it into the final six this year.
Back in 2006, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won this category for the first season of “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” This year, four Experts and three Editors expect her to win for the first season of her new HBO laffer “Veep.”
That leaves 2010 winner Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”), Laura Linney (“The Big C”) — who had gone three for three in previous Emmy bids — and Martha Plimpton (“Raising Hope”) off this year’s final ballot.
