‘Hitchcock’ shakes up Oscars race with Nov. 23 release

Fox Searchlight pulled off a surprise worthy of the subject of its new film “Hitchcock” with Thursday’s announcement that this biopic will be released on Nov. 23. This first feature from documentarian Sacha Gervasi (“Anvil! The Story of Anvil”) only wrapped in late May.

Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins plays the renowned director, Alfred Hitchcock, in this film based on Stephen Rebello‘s 1990 bestseller about the making of the movie “Psycho.” BAFTA nominee John McLaughlin (“Black Swan”) scripted the adaptation.

So convinced was Hitchcock in the material that he abandoned the glossy Technicolor suspense tales which he had been turning out with great success to make the low budget black and white horror film in 1960.

Oscar champ Helen Mirren plays Hitch’s loyal wife Alma Reville who supported him as he cobbled together the financing for this film while Emmy winner Toni Collette is his trusty assistant Peggy Robertson

Tony winner Scarlett Johansson features as Janet Leigh who made a memorable appearance in “Psycho” and was rewarded with her only Oscar nomination. Could this be the role that finally earns Johannson her first Oscar bid?

James D’Arcy plays Anthony Perkins who was haunted by the role of Norman Bates for the rest of his life while Jessica Biel is Vera Miles, one of a string of actresses who Hitchcock tried to mold into his ideal woman. Tony nominee Michael Stuhlbarg portrays Universal studio exec Lew Wasserman and Danny Huston is scripter Whitfield Cook.
