Watch: Jacki Weaver on ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro

“I’ve gone from the vilest mother in the world to the sweetest mother in the world!” So says Jacki Weaver as she chats to Gold Derby about her Oscar-nominated turn in “Animal Kingdom” two years ago and her current featured role in “Silver Linings Playbook.”

In “Sliver Linings,” she plays Dolores Solitano, the loving and supportive mother of troubled son Pat (Bradley Cooper) who is struggling with bipolar disorder. How different a woman from Janine “Smurf” Cody, the matriarch of a crime family.

After decades starring on stage and screen in her native Australia, that role in “Animal Kingdom” raised Weaver’s profile internationally. She garnered both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.

“It was amazing,” Weaver says, reminiscing about her Oscar experience. “I was kind of dazed but when they read out the winner, and it’s not you, there’s a very sharp stab of disappointment that lasts a split second and then there’s this warm wave of relief that you don’t have to make the acceptance speech.”

This year, Weaver finds herself in the thick of Oscar season once again, appearing alongside Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro in this film by David O. Russell. Asked about her chances of a possible second nomination, Weaver is much more relaxed this time around. “I’m just trying to take each day as it comes, and there’s a hell of a lot of competition out there.”

“I’ll tell you what really excited me,” Weaver laughs. “I jumped up and down in the air [because] the New York Times called me the ‘sensational Jacki Weaver’ and I kept ringing people and telling them, “I’m sensational! How about that!” and that was just as good as getting an award. It was very nice!”
