MTV Movie Awards shocker: ‘Twilight’ beats ‘Hunger Games’

“Twilight” fans showed their might at this year’s MTV Movie Awards held Sunday. Nominees had been chosen by a panel of experts which snubbed past champs Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for their performances. However, winners were still decided by popular vote and the fourth installment in the franchise — “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” — claimed Movie of the Year while real-life sweethearts Pattinson and Stewart took Best Kiss for the fourth year in a row. (See full list of winners here.)

Frontrunner “The Hunger Games” still won four races, including popcorn buckets for stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson as well as Best Fight and Best Transformation (Elizabeth Banks).

Oscar nominee Shailene Woodley (“The Descendants”) won Breakthrough Performance edging out, among others, another Academy Award contender Rooney Mara (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo“).

Russell Brand hosted the 21st annual edition of these kudos from the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City. They aired across the MTV family of channels. Johnny Depp was feted with the Generation Award while Emma Stone received the inaugural Trailblazer Award.
