The nominees for Best Animated Feature range from two blockbuster sequels to an off-beat studio film to two low-budget European entries.
“Rango,” one of the best reviewed films of the year, is the clear frontrunner in this race. This first animated feature from director Gore Verbinski stars Johnny Depp as the voice of a lizard stranded in a town facing a water shortage.
“Puss in Boots” is a spin-off from the “Shrek” series. Chris Miller helmed this well-received hit about the wily feline. The original “Shrek” won this race when it was introduced in 2001.
“Kung Fu Panda” contended in this category in 2008, losing to “WALL-E.” The sequel, “Kung Fu Panda 2,” received good reviews and set a box office record for a film directed by a woman (Jennifer Yuh Nelson).
Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli co-directed the simply drawn “A Cat in Paris” about a housecat who goes on the prowl to assist a house thief.
In “Chico and Rita,” Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal use a traditional animation style to tell the tale of a romance between two lovers of music.
