The music branch scoring system resulted in only two tunes qualifying for Best Song.
Bret McKenzie was the music supervisor on “The Muppets” and was also eligible for composing “Life’s a Happy Song.” While the film was a comeback vehicle for Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang, “Man or Muppet” features only the newly minted Muppet Walter and his human sidekick Jason Segel. McKenzie won a Grammy as part of the duo Flight of the Conchords and was nominated for six Emmys for the HBO comedy series of the same name.
“Real in Rio” was written by Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett for the animated flick “Rio.” This is the first nomination for Grammy champ Mendes and Brown, and the second for Garrett, who contended for co-writing the song “Love You I Do” from “Dreamgirls.”
