‘Lincoln,’ Daniel Day-Lewis, Laura Linney early Oscar frontrunners

Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming biopic “Lincoln” is predicted to win Best Picture at this year’s Oscars according to early voting by Gold Derby users. And Daniel Day-Lewis is a clear favorite to claim his third Best Actor Academy Award for portraying the 16th American president.

Laura Linney is forecast to win her first Best Actress Oscar for playing the mistress of the 32nd chief executive, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in “Hyde Park on Hudson.” She has lost that race twice (“You Can Count on Me,” 2000; “The Savages,” 2007) and supporting once (“Kinsey,” 2004).

Spielberg has two Oscars for directing (“Schindler’s List, 1993; “Saving Private Ryan,” 1998) but is well behind Paul Thomas Anderson for his helming of “The Master.” Anderson also wrote this period piece about a charismatic religious leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his most devout follower (Joaquin Phoenix). Anderson’s only previous Best Director bid was in 2007 for “There Will Be Blood” which won Day-Lewis the second of his two Oscars (the first was for My Left Foot” in 1989).

Phoenix is in a tight race with Leonardo DiCaprio as a ruthless slave owner in “Django Unchained” for Best Supporting Actor. Neither has won an Oscar with Phoenix contending twice before (“Gladiator,” supporting 2000; “Walk the Line,” lead 2005) and DiCaprio having lost supporting once (“What’e Eating Gilbert Grape,” 1993) and lead twice (“The Aviator,” 2004; “Blood Diamond,” 2006).

The recent trailer for “Les Miserables” showcased the singing talents of Anne Hathaway. She is far ahead to win Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the tragic Fantine in Tom Hooper‘s adaptation of the 1988 Tony-winning musical. She lost her only previous Oscar bid for her lead role in “Rachel Getting Married” in 2008.

  1. this is nonsense….every year the “experts” conduct this shot in the dark predicting and they are almost always wrong. research back to last years may/june predictions if u want a good laugh………

  2. I don’t care how good Daniel Day lewis is — he’s already won twice and it’s too soon since he just won. Leonardo Dicaprio deserves a best actor oscar.
