When we asked Derbyites in our message boards how many Oscar nominations might be nabbed by “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” when it opens in December, a riot broke out. Passionate “Hobbit” fans made outrageous claims while detractors stamped down expectations.
We decided to offer our own reality check – see it here, category per category.
“The Hobbit” is a prequel to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, of course, which was generously hailed by Oscar voters, who gave the series 17 awards out of 30 nominations. “Return of the King” not only won Best Picture, but it went undefeated in 11 categories as it tied the record for most Oscars previously set by “Ben-Hur” and “Titanic.”
