With Tony Award win, Cyndi Lauper just Oscar away from EGOT

With a brand new Tony Award on her mantle, Cyndi Lauper is on the verge of the treasured awards grand slam nicknamed the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). She now has three pieces of the quartet and only needs an Academy Award to join the 11 others to acheive the grand slam.

Lauper won the 2013 Tony for Best Original Score of “Kinky Boots.” In 1984, she took home the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Her acting skills earned her an Emmy Award in 1995 as Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Mad About You.”

While she has never received an Academy Award nomination, it could come for either writing an original song for a movie version of this hit musical or the right acting role.

Tom Hanks could have also been a step closer had he taken the Tony Award as Best Actor in a Play for “Lucky Guy.” He has already won two Oscars and six Emmys in his 30-year career. Tracy Letts (“Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf“) defeated him in somewhat of an upset.

The 11 people who have already achieved EGOT status by winning all four trophies are Mel Brooks, John Gielgud, Whoopi Goldberg, Marvin Hamlisch, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno, Mike Nichols, Richard Rodgers, Scott Rudin, and Jonathan Tunick.

Who are the other active performers and behind-the-scenes people that are just one notch away from winning an EGOT?

Missing an Oscar are Harry Belafonte, Anne Garefino, Julie Harris, James Earl Jones (who has an honorary award), John Kander, Robert Lopez, Cynthia Nixon, Trey Parker, Marc Shaiman, Matt Stone, Lily Tomlin, and Dick Van Dyke.

Needing an Emmy Award are Elton John, Alan Menken, Tim Rice, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Lacking a Tony Award are Julie Andrews, Burt Bacharach, Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, Cher, Michael Giacchino, Randy Newman, Martin Scorsese, Barbra Streisand (who has an honorary award), John Williams, Robin Williams, and Kate Winslet.

Missing a Grammy Award are Ellen Burstyn, Jeremy Irons, Liza Minnelli (who has an honorary award), Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Vanessa Redgrave, Geoffrey Rush, and Maggie Smith.
