“The Daily Show” has been such a ferocious juggernaut at the Emmys that it’s won Best Variety Series 10 years in a row even when Jon Stewart sometimes submitted garbage episodes to the judges. This year his episode entry (air date Aug. 31, 2012) is strong again, showcasing him at his liberal firebrand best as he rails against absurdities at the GOP convention in Tampa.
“Clint Eastwood just spent 12 minutes of the most important night in Mitt Romney‘s life yelling at a chair!” Stewart harrumps. “This is the most fun I’ve gotten from an old man since Dick Cheney nonfatally shot one in the face.” After showing a few moments of Romney’s nomination acceptance speech, Stewart rants in exasperation, “Bull f-ing s—!”
Below are the other episodes submitted in this category. Let’s start with the strongest rival:
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” – (Jan. 24, 2013) – After 10 years of being the butt of Kimmel’s jokes, Matt Damon takes over the show, gagging Kimmel and tying him up in a chair. “I am in command of this ship!” he roars as he trots out guests Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and even the ex-galpal who triggered their war: Sarah Silverman. More glitterati appear via Skype, including Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez and Robert De Niro. Last year, an equally impressive parade of A-Listers (including Oprah) appeared on the post-Oscars special that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” submitted to Emmy judges when it was nominated for the first time. But “The Daily Show” still prevailed. Wouldn’t it now be ironic if Kimmel’s show finally pulled off a victory when its star merely played a supporting, gagged role?
“The Colbert Report” (Oct. 24, 2012) – Guest, Anthony Everett (author, “The Rise of Rome”). Best part is Stephen Colbert‘s rant as he responds to Donald Trump‘s public offer to pay $5 million to Barack Obama if he reveals his passport and school records. Colbert offers to pay Trump $1 million on one condition, “I must dip my balls in your mouth …. Nothing would make America happier than having something go into your mouth instead of coming out of it.”
“Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” – Fallon dons drag and dances with Michelle Obama, then has a dishy chat with her. Mrs. Obama reveals of her family, “We are Beyonce devotees” and then rah-rahs for Fallon to become host of the Oscars.
“Real Time with Bill Maher” (April 12, 2013) – Looks like Emmy’s biggest loser will get skunked again thanks to a rather dull submission starring Bob Costas, Stephanie Cutter (ex-Obama strategies), David Stockman (“The Great Deformation”) and others.
“Saturday Night Live” (March 9, 2013) — Host Justin Timberlake performs a music imitation of Elton John and joins the “Five Timer’s Club” comprised of comedians Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks and Steve Martin who’ve emceeded “SNL” that often.
