On Aug. 2, the motion picture academy announced that Ellen DeGeneres will host the 86th annual edition of the Oscars on March 2. This marks a return engagement for the TV talk show host, who emceed the 2006 kudocast.
Back then, she presided over a ceremony that had just under 40 million viewers tuning in to see “The Departed” win Best Picture. Reviews for her efforts were divided, with some critics carping about her folksiness while others welcomed her low-key approach. She did reap an Emmy bid in the now-defunct individual variety performance category but was bested by crooner Tony Bennett for a TV concert.
