How do this year’s Emmy nominations compare to record holders?

While a slew of shows did well at this year’s Emmy nominations, just how do their total tallies compare to the record holders in each genre? 

Turns out that this year’s top contenders all fall short of the benchmarks set by some of TV’s most celebrated fare. Of course, in one case, the record holder is the same series that racked up the most bids in its genre this year. And in several genres, this year’s most-cited shows fell just one nomination short of tying the records. 

DRAMA SERIES
Most in 2013: “Game of Thrones” – 16 nominations
Record Holder: “NYPD Blue” (1994) – 27 nominations

COMEDY SERIES
Most in 2013: “30 Rock” – 13 nominations
Record Holder: “30 Rock” (2009) – 22 nominations

MINISERIES
Most in 2013: “American Horror Story: Asylum” – 17 nominations
Record Holder: “Roots” (1977) – 37 nominations

MADE FOR TELEVISION MOVIE
Most in 2013: “Behind the Candelabra” – 15 nominations
Record Holders: “Eleanor and Franklin” (1976); “Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years” (1977); “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee” (2007); “Grey Gardens” (2009) – 17 nominations

VARIETY PROGRAM
Most in 2013: “Saturday Night Live” – 15 nominations
Record Holder: “Saturday Night Live” (2011) – 16 nominations

REALITY PROGRAM
Most in 2013: “Dancing With the Stars” – 9 nominations
Record Holders: “Dancing With The Stars” (2009); “American Idol” (2011) – 10 nominations
