Chris Beachum: Good, bad and ugly of Golden Globe TV awards

The television categories at this year’s Golden Globe Awards offered up a lot of the expected plus a couple of interesting surprises. (Read Chris’s review of film awards here.)

THE GOOD
It can’t be said often enough … Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were incredibly funny, charming, witty and everything you would want in hosts. Bring them back!!

The presentation of their category of Best TV Comedy Actress with Fey holding onto Jennifer Lopez and Poehler boozing it up with George Clooney was priceless.

The wins by “Homeland” were expected but also deserved for a great second season.

The same goes for Julianne Moore (“Game Change“) and Kevin Costner (“Hatfields and McCoys“).

The show itself was very well-paced, full of entertaining presenters. We needed more of Fey and Poehler, though. They disappeared for some long stretches.

THE BAD
While “Girls” and Lena Dunham are certainly the hot commodities, the show is just not funny at all. I absolutely do not get the appeal.

Can’t something be done about those amazingly long walks that the TV people (and the audience) must suffer. It really drags the show down.

THE UGLY
What exactly does Dame Maggie Smith do on the very good “Downton Abbey” that deserves to be showered with award after award? Especially when she never shows up to receive them.

While I usually like Don Cheadle, “House of Lies” is pretty much unwatchable.

TV stars not even bothering to show up: winner Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Woody Harrelson, Clive Owen and Sigourney Weaver.

  1. I have heard before Maggie Smith hates award ceremonies and never attends them. And I kind of think she and Downton Abbey are a little overrated. I can’t think of a candidate in that category I would rather have won though. Don Cheadle beating Louis C.K. was bad to me. Kevin Costner beating Benedict Cumberbatch was horrendous and Mandy Patinkin losing to Ed Harris just made me sad. Girls, huh? A real love it or hate it kind of thing. I personally love it and was thrilled to see Lena up there, but I would have preferred to see a split where Julia got best actress and Girls got best comedy.

  2. I’ve never heard of the other programs in the tv miniseries category, but I love Sherlock, so obviously I think that Benedict should have won.

  3. Maybe they are working, Maggie Smith’s cancer is very bad, and she hates to travel, some people who live in NYC don’t want to have travel to LA all the time (Baldwin), the flu is going around like crazy. I do think we should be “mad” or say its bad people don’t show up without knowing

Humor is subjective, I think Girls is hilarious. i have also lived in NYC, and know the girls the show is about, its very relatable

  4. Girls is more of a drama than a comedy, but because it’s half an hour it gets forced into the comedy category. Don’t hold that against it.

  5. I hate when they admit to hating awards shows but submit their names over and over. Those like Maggie Smith and Woody Allen are big enough stars when they can tell TPTB they don’t want their name submitted. I gave Smith a pass because I don’t think the globes has a submit process (like Emmys or Oscars).

  6. this guy makes me laugh because he is clearly SUCH A CROTCHETY CURMUDGEON OF AN OLD MAN. of course you don’t get Girls and don’t think its funny…you probably never will.
