Grammys history favors Fun. to win Best New Artist

The nominees for Best New Artist at the Grammys are:

Alabama Shakes
Hunter Hayes
The Lumineers
Frank Ocean

Each represents a different genre field of music: Alabama Shakes (rock), Fun (pop), Hunter Hayes (country), the Lumineers (American roots) and Frank Ocean (R&B).

Fun. and Ocean lead with six nominations each, including bids for Record and Album of the Year.  Hayes is up for three and Alabama Shakes and the Lumineers have two noms apiece.

Ocean was the frontrunner until the day the Grammy nominations were announced when he failed to receive expected bids for Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance.

Fun. is nominated in all four categories in the general field. Of the eight previous times this has happened, seven of them won Best New Artist: Bobbie Gentry (1967), Christopher Cross (1980), Cyndi Lauper (1984), Tracy Chapman (1988), Mariah Carey (1990), Paula Cole (1997) and Amy Winehouse (2007).

India.Arie (2001) is the only one to be nominated throughout the general field to lost Best New Artist. The odds are in Fun.’s favor.

  1. But though Fun is likely to win BNA, remember being nommed in all four does NOT guarantee you’ll win ’em all; only Christopher Cross won all four in one year. (Besides Cross, the only other artist to win all four in his or her entire CAREER? Adele won BNA for her first album and the others for her second.)
