David Schnelwar: Why ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ will win Record of the Year at Grammys

The Record of the Year nominees at this year’s Grammys are:

“Lonely Boy” – The Black Keys

“Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” – Kelly Clarkson

“We Are Young” – Fun. featuring Janelle Monae

“Somebody That I Used To Know” – Gotye featuring Kimbra

“Thinkin Bout You” – Frank Ocean

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” – Taylor Swift

The Black Keys, Fun. and Frank Ocean are also nominated for Album of the Year.

“Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and “We Are Young” are also nominated for Song of the Year.  “Somebody That I Used To Know” was not submitted for Song of the Year.

Taylor Swift is the only nominee who previously contended in this category with a 2009 bid for “You Belong With Me.” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is from her album “Red,” which was released after this year’s eligibility period. It will likely be a major contender at next year’s Grammys. Swift is also nominated this year in two categories for her song “Safe & Sound” from the film “The Hunger Games.”

Rock songs have done well in this category: U2’s “Beautiful Day” (2000), “Walk On”(2001), Coldplay’s “Clocks” (2003), Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (2005), Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” (2009). The difference between “Lonely Boy” and those songs is that this Black Keys track was not played on Adult Contemporary radio.

Four of the six nominees peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100: “Somebody That I Used To Know” (8 weeks), “We Are Young” (6 weeks) and both “Stronger” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” at three weeks.

“Somebody That I Used To Know” was #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 of 2012 and #1 on VH1’s Top 20 of 2012, as was last year’s Record of the Year winner “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele.

I predict “Somebody That I Used To Know” will win Record of the Year.
