At this early point on the derby track, Keith Simanton (IMDB) picks “Gravity” to win nine Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actress, Editing, Score, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. (See his full rankings.)
“It’s a smash,” he says in our chat — a solid film with strong critical support that’s a crowd-pleaser, too. Simanton likens it to last year’s champ “Argo,” which many pundits discounted early on when it debuted in October. Now he thinks “Gravity” may be “the one consistent movie” that may hold on throughout the derby while other ponies temporarily surge ahead, then fall behind.
One of its strongest plusses is its director: “You have Alfonso Cuaron, who a genial, wonderful guy with great films behind him,” Simanton says.
