MTV VMAs: Top 10 things you need to know

.) Justin Timberlake is now the second biggest winner in MTV VMA history with a total of 18 Moonmen. Top champ: Madonna (20).

.) Justin Timberlake finally won Video of the Year upon his fifth nomination. Compare that to Michael Jackson, who never won despite three nominations.

.) Justin Timberlake is the second artist from the “TRL” era of MTV to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Britney Spears was the first in 2011. Beyonce and Eminem are the next most likely.

.) After six years of female artists dominating the Video of the Year award, the streak has now ended.

.) Taylor Swift now joins a club of five females (Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson and Lady Gaga) winning Best Female Video twice. Madonna still holds the record with three wins.

.) This is the first year Beyonce has been nominated and did not win a VMA since her solo debut in 2003.

.) Despite four nominations each, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke went home empty handed.

.) Selena Gomez‘ Best Pop Video win and Bruno Mars‘ Best Male Video win were least expected among editors and posters at GoldDerby.

.) Thirty Seconds to Mars now ties Metallica, Limp Bizkit and Green Day as two-time VMA winners for Best Rock Video. They are only surpassed by Linkin Park with three wins and Aerosmith with four.

.) Expect many of the same performers and winners to return for the 2014 VMAs. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Drake all have anticipated albums to be released before the end of 2013.
