USA Today’s Claudia Puig predicts ’12 Years a Slave’ to win Best Picture Oscar

USA Today‘s Claudia Puig predicts “12 Years a Slave” will win Best Picture at the Oscars as well as Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Adapted Screenplay and Score . 

In her predictions just entered at Gold Derby, she also forecasts a great night for “Gravity” with six wins: Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Cinematography, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. 

Puig’s backing bolsters the frontrunner status of “12 Years a Slave,” which now has 14 of 23 Experts picking it to prevail as Best Picture. Other supporters: Edward Douglas (Comingsoon), Thom Geier (Entertainment Weekly), Mark Harris (Grantland), Dave Karger (Fandango),  Tariq Khan (Fox News), Mary Milliken (Reuters), Michael Musto (Gawker, Out), Kevin Polowy (Next Movie), Steve Pond (TheWrap), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere), Glenn Whipp (Los Angeles Times) and Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com).

Gravity” has the backing of six Experts: Thelma Adams (Yahoo), Guy Lodge (HitFix), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and me. 

Three films have the support of one pundit apiece. Christopher Rosen (Huffington Post) likes the looks of “Saving Mr. Banks” while Scott Feinberg (Hollywood Reporter) goes for the unseen “American Hustle” and Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) opts for the yet-to-screen “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

She joins the majority (18) in predicting Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine“) to win Best Actress with only five Experts picking “Gravity” star Sanda Bullock. 

Puig’s vote for Oprah Winfrey (“The Butler“) breaks her tie for supporting actress with “12 Years” ingenue Lupita Nyongo with an even dozen Oscarologists now with Winfrey. 

And she boosts the bid by Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyer’s Club”) for Best Supporting Actor who now has a 12 to 10 edge over Michael Fassbender (“12 Years a Slave“).
