Notable Oscarologist Dave Karger (Fandango) foresees a sweep by “12 Years a Slave” at the Academy Awards, according to his predictions just logged at Gold Derby. Karger picks it to nab Best Picture, Director (Steve McQueen), Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyongo) and Best Adapted Screenplay. See Karger’s full predix here. See how his rankings compare to other Experts in eight categories here.
Karger’s backing bolsters the frontrunner status of “12 Years a Slave,” which has already been seen by industry insiders and has 11 of 20 Experts picking it to prevail as Best Picture. Other supporters: Thelma Adams (Yahoo), Thom Geier (Entertainment Weekly), Mary Milliken (Reuters), Michael Musto (Gawker, Out), Kevin Polowy (Next Movie), Steve Pond (TheWrap), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood) and Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere).
Two films still unseen come in second and third place. “American Hustle” has the backing of seven Oscarologists: Edward Douglas (Comingsoon), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Christopher Rosen (Huffington Post), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Alex Suskind (Moviefone), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and me. Two seers opt for “The Wolf of Wall Street” – Scott Feinberg (Hollywood Reporter) and Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com).
Karger’s forecast in the supporting actress contest is noteworthy since it bucks the pundit consensus that Oprah Winfrey (“The Butler“) already has that chunk of academy gold in the bag. Thirteen Experts say Oprah will win. However, five other Oscarologists agree with Karger.
Karger believes Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine“) will snag the lead actress laurels. In second place, he picks Sanda Bullock, star of “Gravity,” which he also ranks second for Best Picture and Director (Alfonso Cuaron).
