Will ’12 Years a Slave’ win Costume Design Oscar for antebellum designs?

Because historical films often feature elaborate, detailed period dress, they almost always win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Last year, the award went to the 19th century literary adaptation “Anna Karenina.” Recent winners have also been set among European royalty (“Marie Antoinette,” “The Duchess,” “The Young Victoria”) as well as Hollywood royalty (“The Aviator,” “The Artist“).

A pair of fantasy films have also won in the last 10 years: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Alice in Wonderland.” “Return of the King” winner Richard Taylor could contend again this year for Peter Jackson‘s “Rings” prequel “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

Oscar-nominee Gary Jones (“The Talented Mr. Ripley”) also designed a fantasy film in the running: “Oz the Great and Powerful.”

Catherine Martin, who won Art Direction and Costume Design Oscars for her husband Baz Luhrmann‘s “Moulin Rouge,” is a possible contender for her 1920s designs in “The Great Gatsby.”

Patricia Norris is a five-time nominee for costumes, but has yet to win. She could earn her first Oscar for “12 Years a Slave,” set in the antebellum United States.

Oscar-winner Michael O’Connor (“The Duchess”) is aiming for his second prize; he designed “The Invisible Woman,” Ralph Fiennes‘s biographical drama about Charles Dickens.

A number of other period films are among possible contenders, including “The Monuments Men,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “The Book Thief,” “The Butler,” and “Therese,” among others.
