Oscars’ makeup branch skunks ‘The Hobbit’ and ’12 Years a Slave’

Never mind that “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” led the Oscar predictions for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by our Experts at Gold Derby. It wasn’t even in the list of seven semi-finalists unveiled today by the motion-picture academy. That’s particularly strange considering “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” was nominated last year while “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” won the category one decade ago.

Also snubbed were three more in our top seven this year: “12 Years a Slave,” “The Butler” and “Rush.”

Instead, the academy advanced “American Hustle,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters,” “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,” “The Lone Ranger. “

On Saturday, January 11, all members of the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films, which will be announced on Jan. 16.

  1. Also surprising that Star Trek: Into Darkness missed out on being included, considering the first film won the award in 2010.
