‘Modern Family,’ ’30 Rock’ expected to lead Emmy nominations for comedy

Modern Family,” the three-time defending champion for Best Comedy Series, will lead the Emmy nominations this year according to the combined predictions of our experts, editors, and more than a thousand users. It is expected to win the top prize for the fourth year in a row — tying “All in the Family” and “Cheers” — in addition to two acting wins (for two-time champs Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen) out of seven bids.

30 Rock” is also predicted to do well. The NBC comedy signed off this season after seven years on the air, and though it won Best Comedy three years in a row (2007-2009), it has not won an Emmy in any category since then. Nevertheless, our predictors expect farewell nominations for the series, as well as stars Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and Jane Krakowski, while Elaine Stritch is favored to earn her fifth Comedy Guest Actress nomination and second win as Baldwin’s overbearing mother.

Returning “Arrested Development,” off the air for seven years before premiering new episodes on Netflix in May, is expected to make a triumphant Emmy comeback, with nominations for Comedy Series as well as bids for actors Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter, all previous nominees in their respective categories.

The Big Bang Theory” is also expected to pick up another Comedy Series nomination. Two-time winner Jim Parsons will be back in the Comedy Actor race, and last year’s surprise Comedy Supporting Actress nominee Mayim Bialik will also make a return appearance, joined by expected first-time nominee Kaley Cuoco. TV legend Bob Newhart is expected to compete for his guest role on the series, and is the favorite to win, which would be the first Emmy in his illustrious career.

  1. Jane Krakowski def. deserves an emmy for her work in the final season of 30 Rock. I’m at a lost for words in how she hasn’t won yet…but this final season she brought it, and knocked it out of the park. Def. deserves a nom and a win!
