Top Tony Awards experts: Harry Haun, Brian Lipton, Tom O’Neil, Wayman Wong

Despite the many upsets at this year’s Tony Awards, four of our experts — Harry Haun (Playbill), Brian Lipton (Theatermania), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wayman Wong (NY Daily News) — all scored 74%.

All four went against the majority of experts who were backing “Matilda” for Best Musical and correctly predicted underdog “Kinky Boots” would prevail. (Lipton and Wong had also been aces at predicting the Tony nominations, foreseeing 79% of the contenders in the top eight races.)

Right behind this quartet was Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby) at 70% followed by David Sheward (Theater Life) with 66%. (Sheward had been tops at predicting the Tony noms with 81%.)

Two of our experts — Thom Geier (EW) and  Andy Humm (Gay USA) — scored 62% while another pair — Susan Haskins (Theater Talk) and Doug Strassler (NY Press) — came in at 58%.

Michael Musto was at 54%, Melissa Bernardo (EW) got 47%, Martin Denton (NY Theatre) scored 38% and Mark Shenton (Sunday Express) earned 35%.

Matt Windman (amNY) predicted 16 categories and scored 38%.
