Blake Shelton won Male Vocalist of the Year in 2011, but lost in 2012 to rival Jason Aldean. This year the two compete against each other again, but Shelton is expected to return to the winner’s circle.
This is the fourth consecutive ACM nomination for Shelton, who leads our combined predictions with 2/5 odds, which includes unanimous support from our editors. He has been much more dominant at the CMA Awards, however, where he has won Male Vocalist for the last four years in a row.
Aldean isn’t even in second place in this year’s contest. That would be Luke Bryan, last year’s surprise Entertainer of the Year champ, who is co-hosting the live event with Shelton. This is his second nomination in the category, and he’s close behind with 7/2 odds.
Aldean is a distant third with 33/1 odds. Like Shelton he is a four-time nominee in this race, but he isn’t nominated in any other categories this year.
Urban, however, is the veteran of the category with two previous wins (2004, 2005) out of nine nominations spanning 10 years. This year he has three other nominations for “Highway Don’t Care,” his collaboration with Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift (Single, Video, and Vocal Event of the Year), and another Vocal Event nod for “We Were Us” with Miranda Lambert.
