For the second week in a row, Alex Preston leads with the best odds (currently 13 to 8) from Gold Derby readers to win this season of “American Idol” after eclipsing Caleb Johnson, who hovers in second place with 23 to 10 odds. See more odds here.
That’s surprising considering Preston got blasted by the judges last week for failing to give enough spunk or mobility to his riff on No Doubt‘s “Don’t Speak.”
“You can give the chill version of a song, but I want you to give it more edge,” Keith Urban said. JLo was tougher: “Your delivery sucked the energy out of the song.”
But at least Preston’s version was, all in all, artistically OK. Poor C.J. Harris ended up in the bottom three after botching Steel Drivers‘ “If It Hadn’t Been for Love.” Harry Connick Jr. told him, “Work on your pitch.” Now Harris has the best Gold Derby odds (2 to 3) to get the boot this week. However, these odds are set before he performs on Wednesday night’s telecast. Close behind him are Dexter Roberts (2 to 1) and Sam Woolf (10/1). Early on this “American Idol” season, Woolf had the best odds to win, but he’s landed in the program’s bottom three twice in the past three weeks, including last week.
