One of the biggest shockers of this year’s Golden Globe nominations was “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and its leading man Andy Samberg copping nominations for its freshman season. It’s no surprise when new shows get in at the Globes. However, we expected “The Michael J. Fox Show” and Robin Williams and his new laffer “The Crazy Ones” to contend instead.
The HFPA members love fresh choices. In the last 12 years, this award has gone to a first-time nominee 10 times, including the last three in a row. Samberg and Michael J. Fox are the only newcomers this year. While Fox is the pick of all our Experts and all but one of the rest of the Editors, his show was snubbed in the series race while “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” reaped a bid.
As this is the type of show that could have easily been overlooked, there is obviously passion for it among Globe voters and giving an award to its star is the perfect place to reward it. Samberg, part of the trio of viral video stars Lonely Island, is the cool choice on the cool series of the bunch. To that end, I wouldn’t count out the cops of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” pulling off a raid in the series category as well, as Ricky Gervais did with “The Office” in 2003.
