It was a wickedly royal battle this past season on “American Horror Story: Coven.” We’re not talking about the one between the young witches clashing over who’ll become the supreme, but the one between Oscar nominee Angela Bassett and Oscar winner Jessica Lange’s Marie Laveau and Fiona Goode.
Though you’d expect the fireworks and scary drama, Lange tells Gold Derby that it really wasn’t like that: “In overall tone, there was more humor in this past season than there was in the one before. I think with ‘Asylum’ it got very, very dark, fast. With ‘Coven’ it was fun because I had some great lines. There was some real comedy in there to play along with all the heavy stuff.”
“I had been intrigued by the visuals,” she adds. “The leather and latex bodysuit. I said ‘That looks scary’ and I’m not really a fright fan, but, of course, when he (creator Ryan Murphy) asked me to come and meet him, I watched everything. I was a little scared then so I’d watch at 12 noon because I’d have nightmare. And, actually, after filming the first episode of ‘Coven,’ I did have a nightmare.”
While Bassett and Lange squared off in savage battles in “Coven,” they won’t be going head-to-head at the Emmys. Lange is in the lead actress race, Bassett in supporting.
