Pharrell Williams kicked off Sunday’s 14th annual edition of the BET Awards with a performance of ‘”Come Get It Bae.” Later in the long evening, he was back on stage to collect prizes for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the Year for “Happy,” his Oscar-nominated tune from “Despicable Me 2.” (See complete list of winners here.)
Coming into these kudos, Beyonce, Jay-Z and Drake led with five nominations each. Drake, who had been expected to perform but was MIA, was named Best Male Hip-Hop Artist for the third time in four years while Beyonce (who closed the show in a pre-taped performance with hubby Jay Z) won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist for the fourth time (and first since 2009) and the couple shared the Collaboration award for “Drunk in Love.”
Among the other performance on the kudocast were Usher, who did a medley of his many hits, John Legend who soared with “You and I” and Chris Brown who stole the show with a rendition of his new Top 10 hit “Loyal.”
Nicki Minaj claimed Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the fifth year running and delivered a powerhouse acceptance speech.
August Alsina claimed both Best New Artist and the Viewers’ Choice Award.
And Lionel Richie was feted for his lifetime of achievement.
